Duncan Phyfe Sofas

Duncan Phyfe sofas have a distinct curve to them.  In a Phyfe sofa, gently rounded sleigh arms will meet at the sofa's back and curve down to the seating area.  A straight back will turn into gracious curves and meet the rest of the sofa at the arms.  Empire styling is very prominent in Phyfe sofas.

Most commonly, Duncan Phyfe worked with rich mahogany wood while making his sofas which he embellished with plenty of hand carved detailing.  There will be brass studs or nail-head trim around the wood trim at all points where upholstery meets wood.

The upholstery on Phyfe sofas was never overstuffed.  Stripes were popular patterns for the upholstery.  At times, leather and fabric would be mixed in the same sofa to create a refined and interesting look.  If the upholstery is done in leather there will be very little piecing of the leather.

Many Phyfe sofas came with matching or coordinating upholstered accent pillows.  While there are variables, 34 inches by 84.75 inches by 23.75 inches is the average size for a Phyfe sofa.
